Museum of fine arts, Boston presents an exhibition of works by El Greco, on view through July 27, 2008, at Gund Gallery.
Works by two of Spain’s greatest artists will be seen for the first time in the context of the artistic climate in which they were created when the Museum Of Fine Arts presents this seminal exhibition focusing on El Greco and Velazquez from the period of 1598 to 1621.
El Greco’s stunning and original late work, dating from around 1600 until his death in 1614, was associated with the court of Philip III as was Velazquez’s early work. In addition, the show will introduce to the American public exceptional works by lesser known but very accomplished artists, among them Juan Bautista Maino, Juan Sanchez Cotan, Luis Tristan, and Gregorio Fernandez. The exhibition will explore the influences of the court of Philip III on the artists and will highlight various iconographic and stylistic innovations that would have a far-reaching impact.
The exhibition is organized by the Museum Of Fine Arts and the Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University. Tour Dates: MFA, April 20 through July 27, 2008; Nasher Museum, August 21, through November 9, 2008. The exhibition is sponsored at both venues by Bank of America. Additional support is provided by the National Endowment for the Humanities, The Homeland Foundation, and the National Endowment for the Arts. The exhibition is presented in collaboration with SEACEX and is supported by the Spanish Ministry for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, and the Ministry of Culture. The television media sponsor in Boston is WCVB-TV 5. A catalogue published by the MFA will accompany this exhibition. Generous support for the catalogue was provided by Scott and Isabelle Black and SEACEX.
