Tomatoes Reduce Prostate Cancer Risk

According to a Harvard Medical School study, diets rich in tomato appear to reduce the risk of prostate cancer. People who consume large amounts of tomatoes and tomato products have a significantly decreased risk for prostate cancer.

The most likely reason appears to be tomatoes' high content of lycopene, a red carotenoid related to beta-carotene. Lycopene, which occurs naturally in tomoatoes, has long been known as an anti-carcinogen.

A recent study finds that eating at least five servings of tomato or tomato-based products a week can reduce the risk of prostate cancers as well as lung and stomach cancer. Eating fresh or lightly cooked tomato is better than consuming tomato based product. And cooked tomatoes may be better than raw tomatoes. Chopping and heating make the cancer-fighting constituents of tomatoes more bioavailable.

So, don't forget to include tomato as one of the ingredients in your daily meal, not only to help lower the risk of cancer but to help meet daily fruit and vegetable recommendations and romote overall health.
