Allan Von Schenkel and Kristen Williams perform 13 brief lyrical works for double bass and piano written especially for them by American composers.

North/South Consonance, Inc. is proud to sponsor the New York recital debut of the Basso Moderno Duo on Monday, May 18 at 8 PM.

The concert will take place on Monday, May 8 at .8 PM at Christ & St Stephen's Church (120 West 69th St) in New York City. Admission is free -- no tickets necessary.

The program will feature 13 brief lyrical works for double bass and piano composed especially for the occasion.

The Basso Moderno Duo promotes the works of living composers from all over the world while educating nontraditional audiences about contemporary music. It also hopes to create a new repertoire for bass and piano and bring music by composers from vastly different backgrounds to diverse audiences,

Allan Von Schenkel, double bass, is active as both performer and composer. He has premiered new works by composers as diverse as Yoko Ono-Lennon, Karlheinz Stockhausen and Alan Hovhaness. Educated at the University of Michigan, Michigan State and Wayne State University, Schenkel studied theory with Dr. Richard Fiske, the gifted student of the incomparable Nadia Boulanger. His mentors on the bass were the world renowned Gary Karr and Stefano Sciascia in Italy.

Schenkel has composed three musicals as well as incidental music for eight plays, the most recent being Picasso's 'Desire Caught by the Tail' (2006) with Banished Productions at the Playbill Cafe in Washington, DC; and '69 Ways to Fall in LOVE' with Kristen Williams during the 2007 Capital Fringe Festival in Washington DC.

Pianist Kristen Williams is a versatile artist who is comfortable performing in a variety of genres. Her playing has been described as "having a great sense of rhythm and syncopation with a light but firm touch.”

Williams is the executive director of the Great Noise Ensemble, Washington DC's premiere contemporary classical chamber music group, with whom she has premiered many new works. Active also as a singer, Ms. Williams has appeared as a soprano soloist with St. Patrick's Catholic Church Choir in Washington DC. Recent piano performances include solo and collaborative work at THE ARC Theater in Washington DC, The Jane Franklin Dance Company, and master classes in Castres, France.

The concert will feature music by Elizabeth Austin, Eleanor Cory, Lee Hoiby, Marie Incontrera, Debra Kaye, Leo Kraft, Max Lifchitz, Julie Mandel, Beata Moon, Sarah Meneely-Kyder, Ned Rorem, Radiohead & Mary Ann Joyce Walter.

The composers will be on hand to introduce their works and meet with the audience during intermission and after the concert. Musicians and composers participating in the event are available to the press for interviews and may be contacted through our office at
