The 79 freedom fighters were reported missing in 1992 after a heavy battle with the Azerbaijanis. Their whereabouts were not known until recently when a video was posted on YouTube showing the Azeris burying the killed Armenians.
During a meeting with the students and faculty of Yerevan's Khachatur Abovian University, the defense minister said Armenian will try to negotiate with the Azerbaijanis for the reburying of the soldiers' remnants and will soon specify the location of a new cemetery.
"I was not a witness to that battle, but according to field commanders the Armenian group came under strong attack and was eventually surrounded and eliminated by the enemy," he explained. "They fought until their last drop of blood and it is my duty to meet with their parents and explain everything."
Ohanian also said Armenia continues negotiations with the Azerbaijani side for the return of four Armenian civilians arrested in April after crossing into the Nakhichevan autonomous region of Azerbaijan.
He said the Azeris first agreed to return the Armenian civilians, but then reneged on their promises, citing the need for further investigation
