It's possible, even likely, Kennedy will be awake during the brain surgery.

It's a good sign that he is having surgery. At first the mainstream press said his brain tumor was inoperable. Obviously that's not the case.

According to the pres release, the surgeon will perform "mapping," where they will map the speech center and movement center of the brain, and destroy as much of the cancer as possible without destroying areas they don't want to destroy. It's possible during surgery they will ask him to move his hand and speak so they can map exactly where those spots are in his brain.

This surgery will be followed with a course of radiation and chemotherapy.

In the press release, Ted Kennedy said he looked forward to a speedy recovery and helping elect Barack Obama President.

He is expected to be in brain tumor surgery for a minimum of 6 hours.
