Surgery was not originally cited as a possibility after his diagnosis was first announced, but evidently further tests revealed it to be a viable option. The surgery will last six hours.

In a statement senator Kennedy says that his team had consulted experts from the around the country and has chosen Dr. Allan Friedman at the Duke University Medical Center to do the brain surgery. "This morning, I will be undergoing surgery with Dr. Allan Friedman at Duke University Medical Center and expect to remain there to recuperate for approximately one week."
Dr. Allan Friedman's info page at Duke University's website says the following about him. "Allan H. Friedman, MD, is an internationally recognized tumor and vascular neurosurgeon. He has a career-long interest in neuro-oncology, is responsible for over ninety percent of all tumor resections and biopsies conducted at Duke, and has written hundreds of articles on the neurosurgical management of brain tumors and vascular lesions. He is head of the Laboratory of Neurosurgical Oncology and an Associate Chief of the Preuss Laboratory for Brain Tumor Research."
