Armenian Genocide Monument Opens in Larnaka

On 28 May a monument commemorating the victims of Armenia Genocide in 1915 in Turkey took place in Larnaka, Cyprus, reported the press service of the Foreign Affairs Ministry.

According to the source the official opening ceremony of the Armenian Genocide monument was conducted by the president of Cyprus Dimitry Khristofias.

The president mentioned in his speech that the place of the monument was not selected by chance, as the first Armenians who escaped from the genocide in eastern Anatolia, turday's Turkey, arrived in Cyprus from the Larnaka port. Armenians in Cyprus have as many rights as people from Cyprus have, they take some initiatives and one of them was the result that in 1982 the Parliament recognized Armenian Genocide. That initiative belongs to Aram Qalajyan who took care of founding the monument.

According to the president the Armenian genocide monument is also a result of common cooperation of the both governments of Armenia and Cyprus, as they both supported to the founding of the monument, besides Qalajyan foundation supported the construction of the square which is now called square of Armenian Genocide Victims.
