On Thursday 5 June, internationally renowned conductor and violinist, Nikolaj Znaider, will perform with The Queensland Orchestra - his only Australian appearance this year.

TQO's performance of Znaider Plays Mozart, from the much loved Tea & Symphony Series, takes place in the historic Brisbane City Hall Auditorium on Thursday 5 June at 11am.

The dynamic, young Znaider, whose name is among the front ranks of international violin virtuosi, promises to perform with unique incandescence in Mozart's First Violin Concerto. He will then exchange his bow for a baton to lead TQO in Elgar’s Enigma variations, some of the most noble and moving English music ever composed, including the beautifully stirring Nimrod variation.

"A budding international star, Nikolaj Znaider has a naturally commanding stage presence, and his performances exude drama and intensity, said The Queensland Orchestra's Director of Artistic Planning, Tom Woods. 'He is an artist and virtuoso in the mould of the great violinists of the 19th and 20th centuries, and his repertoire reflects that. It is such a thrill to host Nikolaj Znaider in his only Australian appearance this year, and to have him play with our Orchestra.

Znaider is regularly invited to work with the world’s leading orchestras including the Vienna Philharmonic, Berlin Philharmonic, Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, London Symphony Orchestra, New York Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony, Philadelphia Orchestra, Cleveland Symphony and enjoys artistic collaborations with acclaimed conductors including Barenboim, Chung, Sir Colin Davis, Dohnanyi, Dutoit, Gergiev, Jansons, Maazel, Masur, Mehta, Rostropovich, Temirkanov and Thielemann.

Born in Denmark to Polish-Israeli parents, he studied with the eminent Russian pedagogue Boris Kushnir. Drawing on this eclectic background, his playing has been heralded in the Strad Magazine as “extraordinarily intelligent, soulful and impassioned, yet without a hint of indulgence. The Chicago Tribune said “perhaps not since the young Gidon Kremer burst upon the violin world in 1970 has a violinist caused quite the stir of Nikolaj Znaider. -- www.thequeenslandorchestra.com.au
