UEFA Appoints Euro 2008 First 12 Match Referees

Match officials are appointed for first 12 UEFA EURO 2008 soccer matches and Italian Roberto Rosetti to officiate opening match Switzerland – Czech Republic.

UEFA last night announced the appointments of the officials for the first 12 of the 31 matches at the forthcoming UEFA EURO 2008.

Italian Roberto Rosetti has been appointed to take charge of the UEFA EURO 2008 opening match between tournament hosts Switzerland and the Czech Republic at the St. Jakob-Park Stadion in Basel on Saturday 07 June, kick-off 18:00 CET.

Germany’s Herbert Fandel will be in charge of the tournament’s second game – Saturday’s other Group A match between Portugal and Turkey at the Stade de Genève in Geneva, kickoff 20:45 CET.

Pieter Vink of the Netherlands has been put in charge of the Group B opener between hosts Austria and Croatia in Vienna on Sunday 08 June, kick-off 18:00 CET, while Sunday’s other Group B match between Germany and Poland in Klagenfurt, kick-off 20:45 CET, has been assigned to Norway’s Tom Henning.

In total 12 referees have been appointed to handle the 31 matches of the final tournament and they will work together with 24 assistant referees in teams of so-called ‘trios’ of the same nationality. The teams of ‘trios’ have been active in UEFA competitions for the past year, mainly in the UEFA Champions League, and therefore have a good understanding of working together.

They are joined by eight appointed 4th officials.

During the final tournament any injured referee will be replaced by the 4th official at the match, and any injured assistant referee will be replaced by a 5th official who will come from the list of assistant referees not officiating at a game on that day.

The full list for the first 12 matches is at UEFA.com.
