“Financial planning professionals must be able to accommodate the needs of a diverse client base,” said Lori Munoz-Reiland, director of business, management, legal, information technology and corporate solutions for UC Irvine Extension. “High net worth clients have an array of unique needs, which financial planners must understand and be comfortable with in order to succeed. This class prepares students to excel in satisfying the specific demands of this type of client.”
“Advanced Financial Planning Strategies for High-Net-Worth Clients” will provide students with a practical, application-based understanding of the latest high net worth planning devices, techniques and strategies with an emphasis on domestic and offshore asset protection strategies and application to California income, estate and gift tax planning. Students will also be equipped with a variety of cutting-edge financial planning strategies and techniques designed to assist in the development of a formal client solution presentation incorporating advanced financial, tax, and estate planning topics.
Course instructor Richard C. Watson III, JD, MSFS, CFP®, ChFC®, CLU®, AEP, EA, is the managing partner of Torres & Watson, an independent financial advisory practice of Ameriprise Financial. His planning experience includes advanced estate planning and income taxation, particularly for clients subject to the alternative minimum tax, as well as executive compensation, and tax-aware investment management issues.
“Since needs of high net worth clients are so unique, it is important to identify specific financial planning tactics that will benefit them the most,” said Watson. “Participants in this course will be armed with an assortment of guiding principles to help them better serve high net worth clients.”
Upon completion of the course, students will have a more in depth understanding of the following:
Asset protection considerations in financial planning
Financial and estate planning for restricted stock
Financial and estate planning for compensatory stock options
Charitable giving of works of art and other collectibles
Valuation freeze techniques—QPRTS, GRATs, GRUTs, and intentionally defective grantor trusts
