Google News reports that Phil Spector, the music pioneer and legend convicted of second degree murder in the 2003 shooting death of actress Lana Clarkson, was assigned to serve his 19 year prison sentence at California's State Prison at Corcoran, where he was assigned to the sensitive needs facility rather than general population.
The State Prison at Corcoran houses 6,919 inmates but Spector will not have to share a cell with any of them. As a sensitive needs inmate, Spector will not have a cellmate.
In addition, Spector will be deemed a medium security inmate and, as such, be able to make certain requests for items he wants in his cell.
Spector's wife, Rachelle Spector, says her husband is already making his wish list. "He wants a TV and an iPod or something like that for listening to music," Rachelle Spector said Tuesday. "And he would like to be able to receive e-mail."
Generally, the sensitive needs facility is comprised of inmates that need protection from dropping out of a gang. However, Prison Lt. Stephen Smith said Spector's notoriety probably got him into the sensitive needs facility.
Rachelle Spector was very relieved to see her husband transferred out of North Kern State Prison where she complained that Spector was being abused. She even wrote a letter to prison officials about the alleged abuse in which she detailed how he was forced to sleep naked on the floor for two nights and to eat out of a bowl with his hands "like a dog."
Prison officials deny the mistreatment and further stated that such behavior "would be a violation of policies and laws." Nonetheless, the claims would be investigated.
