MSNBC reports that researchers have compiled a list of the top 10 "bad boy" baby names that can predispose your child to a life of crime and land your baby boy in jail. Topping the list of "bad boy" baby names is none other than Ivan, which is just a "terrible" name. (Sorry, I couldn't help it!)
The top 10 "bad boy" baby names are (in alphabetical order) Alec, Ernest, Garland, Ivan, Kareem, Luke, Malcolm, Preston, Tyrell and Walter.
According to professor David Kalist, a professor at Shippensburg University, giving your baby boy one of the above "bad boy" baby names may actually land your child in jail one day. Kalist and his associate, Daniel Lee, believe that while giving children “unpopular names are likely not to be the cause of crime,” the social consequences of having an odd, strange or different first name, may actually “increase the tendency toward juvenile delinquency.”
The bad boy baby name findings were based upon a study of 15,000 names given to baby boys between 1987 and 1991. Professor Kalist and Lee found that the more unusual the name, the more likely a boy is to commit a delinquent act.
The Today Show's Erin Burnett summed it up on Friday, when the Top 10 Bad Boy Baby Name List was revealed, as follows: “Basically, if you’re teased mercilessly your entire childhood for your name, you become an angry, bitter person, and you lash out in a way that could be negative.”
The study, which was published in The Social Science Quarterly, also drew a correlation between the baby names and the level of education of the parents. For example, the report noted that a baby girl named Allison is rarely the child of high school dropouts. In essence the report states that the less schooling the parent(s) have, the more likely they will give their child an unpopular name.
So expectant parents be warned. If you give your child the wrong name, such as a name off the Top 10 Bad Boy Baby Name list, be prepared to spend a lot of money of criminal defense lawyers and make numerous visits to the county jail or state correctional facility.
For the proud parents of twin bad boys, Ivan and Alec, good luck. You may want to consider a formal name change if it's not already too late. If their criminal case is still pending, ask their lawyer about exploring the new "Blame the Name" defense. They have nothing to lose except their freedom.
