In a surprise move to both Los Angeles political and police leaders, LAPD Chief William J. Bratton will resign. Chief Bratton plans to announce his decision to resign at a noon press conference today and further announce his plans to take over at a private security firm.
Los Angeles Police Department Chief William Bratton resignation is no doubt a shock to the Los Angeles community as many credit him with rebuilding and reshaping what many would describe as a corrupt police force.
Assistants to Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa said the mayor had no knowledge of LAPD Chief Bratton's intention to resign.
Since LAPD Chief Bratton took over in 2002, the crime rate in Los Angeles has declined. Bratton's resignation comes with three years remaining on his second term.
In reshaping the Los Angeles Police Department, LAPD Chief Bratton employed many of the crime fighting tactics he used when he was in charge of the NYPD such as focusing on crime data and crime mapping in an effort to determine which areas of Los Angeles need more policing. The result has been a steady decline in crime rates throughout Los Angeles County.
In recent interviews, LAPD Chief Bratton has said he believes the Los Angeles Police Department would continue on just fine if he were to leave. He said in December, "If I left tomorrow, this would continue after I'm gone."
Maybe Chief Bratton knew then what is to be announced later today. Time will only tell what impact LAPD Chief William Bratton's resignation will actually have on the city of Los Angeles.
