What are you doing? Trying to get on Twitter!

Twitter
Follow us on Twitter

This is exactly what the whole world would've tweeted this morning on Twitter if only we were able to tweet. For almost two hours this morning, the whole world came to a screeching halt as Twitter, the grand daddy of all social networking sites, went down and we all got a taste of what life would be like without Twitter. Say it ain't so!

So why did Twitter go down this morning? In a word, hackers! Apparently, hateful hackers bombarded Twitter with what is called a Denial of Service attack which prevents users from accessing the social networking site.

Technically speaking, a "DoS" (shop talk for Denial of Service) attack occurs when hackers overload a Web site with server requests which is often accomplished by infecting an army of computers with viruses. Then, when the infected computers simultaneously try to access the Web site (Twitter.com), the servers cannot keep up and blah, blah, blah.
Whatever.

Knowing the reason why Twitter went down this morning is small consolation for the feeling of disconnect that came over us as we got a sneak peak into a world without Twitter. All we know is that we were left with nothing but the things we were doing and no way to tweet about it. Not cool.

Twitter users didn't take the Twitter shut down sitting down as many of the site's users used all 140 characters not to describe "What are you doing?", but rather, to complain about feeling disconnected from the news of the day while the site was shut down.

It almost makes one wish we never had it to begin with that way we wouldn't know what we were missing. What's the point of doing anything if you can't get on Twitter and tweet about it. As a matter of fact, how do we know if anyone is really doing anything if it's not tweeted. As far as I'm concerned, if it isn't on Twitter, it didn't happen.
