
On Tuesday, Arkansas prosecutors charged Bill Clinton's former chief of staff with attempting to smuggle contraband into Arkansas' death row at the state's Varner Unit. An arrest warrant was issued for Betsey Wright and the former Bill Clinton chief of staff is expected to turn herself in next week.
Betsey Wright served as Bill Clinton's chief of staff for seven years while the former president was governor in Arkansas. Wright is know to be a avid opponent of the death penalty and frequent visitor to death row at the Varner Unit, a high security prison in Grady, Arkansas.
The former Clinton aide was arrested on May 22 after allegedly smuggling a red Doritos bag containing 48 tattoo needles, a pen with tweezers and a needle inside, a Swiss Army knife and a box cutter into the Varner Unit.
In an interview with the Associate Press, the former chief of staff denied the allegations of smuggling. "They think it's me, but it's not," Wright said. "I certainly did not do what they have charged me with," Wright said.
The case against the former Clinton aide came to light after a documents were obtained detailing an sexual affair between a death-row inmate and a guard in which contraband was being passed to the inmate. All told, 51 charges were filed against Betsey Wright stemming from the alleged contraband smuggling incident at the prison.
It was Betsey Wright who coined the phrase "bimbo eruptions" referring to referring to the series of women claiming they had affairs with the former president Bill Clinton, which were many. She was also the inspiration for character portrayed by Kathy Bates in the movie "Primary Colors."
