Just prior to the drunk driving arrest, David Bentley spent Wednesday evening drinking and attending a concert by Australian rock band Jet in East London. Shortly thereafter, he lost control of his Porsche and crashed into the lamp post.
David Bentley was asked to perform field sobriety tests and administered a roadside breath test after which he was was arrested for drunk driving.
Yesterday, David Bentley issued the following statement about his drunk driving arrest:
"I should like to apologize to my club and the supporters for my actions," Bentley said in a statement released by Tottenham. "It was wholly unacceptable and I fully appreciate that as a professional footballer I have a duty to behave in a reputable and responsible manner.
"I am thankful that nobody was injured in the accident. This has been a wake-up call for me both personally and professionally."
David Bentley's drunk driving arrest is only his most recent problem since coming to he Tottenham Hotspurs in July of 2008. He has twice before been suspended for excessive speeding which shouldn't be a surprise given his 2007 statement to MTV in which he said "I live my life on the edge. I like driving too fast in my Ferrari."
It seems as though David Bentley's drunk driving arrest may be the last straw for the young soccer star as his off-field shenanigans have worn thin with both teammates and management. According to Tottenham Supporters Trust chairman Bernie Kingsley said: "No one at Spurs would be upset to see Bentley leave. Players have too much money and time on their hands. David has let himself and the club down."
