It appears tragedy has, once again, struck at Virginia Tech University as two students were found shot dead near campus on Thursday. The Two Virginia Tech students were found dead at a popular student campground about 15 miles from the Virginia Tech campus in Blacksburg.
According to Montgomery County Sheriff Lt. Brian Wright, the two Virginia Tech students have been identified as David Lee Metzler, 19, of Lynchburg and Heidi Lynn Childs, 18, of Forest. Their bodies were found by a passerby at a Jefferson National Forrest in the parking area of the Caldwell Fields campground.
Reports indicate that the two Virgina Tech students were both shot. David Lee Metzler was found shot inside a car and Heidi Lynn Childs's body was found just outside the car that was parked at the popular student campgrounds.
Sadly, the discovery of the bodies of these two Virginia Tech students is yet another tragedy for the University Two years ago, in what was the worst mass shooting in U.S. history, a Virgina Tech student killed 32 others on campus before killing himself and, just earlier this year, a Virginia Tech student was beheaded by another student at a campus cafe.
The shooting death of the two Virginia Tech students at the campgrounds has, once again, prompted Virginia Tech President Charles Steger into the role of campus counselor for his students.
In an email addressing the deaths of the two Virginia Tech students, Steger wrote: "Trauma like this is deeply painful to us all," Steger wrote. "Once again, this community is visited by senseless violence and tragedy upon aspiring young minds from our campus. "I know that many of you likely have complex feelings about now. How can this happen in this area, at this time, to this community?"
At this time, no suspect(s) have been identified in the death of the two Virginia Tech students at the campgrounds as autopsies on the bodies of Metzler and Childs are currently underway.
