South Carolina Police No Chase Policy

Stop, or we'll say stop again! That pretty much sums up the new South Carolina police no-chase policy instituted by the mayor of the small South Carolina town of Wellford after a police officer hurt himself while chasing a suspect back in August.

The South Carolina Police no-chase policy was ordered by Wellford Mayor Sallie Peake's after a police officer had to miss work due to injuring himself while chasing a suspect believed to be in possession of crack cocaine. As a result, the city had to pay for the officer who missed work.

Today, Mayor Peake defended her no-chase police policy arguing that chasing after a guy on a drug possession charge is just not worth the cost to the taxpayers if an police officer gets hurt.

While the intent of the South Carolina police no-chase policy was intended to ban police officers from chasing suspects on foot, Mayor Peake's actual written order is much broader stating that she did "not want anyone chasing any suspects whatsoever."

So I guess the new Wellford, South Carolina Police Department motto is "To protect and serve ...as long as we don't have to run after you to do it!"
