The powerful West Indonesian earthquake no doubt sent residents into panic as they raced to get out of their houses to higher ground amid horrifying memories of the deadly 2004 Asian tsunami that killed over 230,000 people. As a matter of fact, Wednesday's West Indonesian earthquake occurred along the same fault line of that deadly quake that decimated towns and villages in Southeast Asia.
A formal tsunami alert was issued for Indonesia, Malaysia, India and Thailand in an email form the the Pacific Tsunami Center. The email warned that "There is a possibility of a destructive regional tsunami in the Indian Ocean."
The massive West Indonesian earthquake comes just a day after a powerful 8.0 to 8.3 earthquake rocked the islands of Somoa and American Samoa causing a giant tsunami that leveled villages. So far a reported 99 people have been killed but that number is certain to rise as many others are still reported missing.
Witnesses to the West Indonesian earthquake said residents of Padang were panicking while running out of buildings as the buildings were collapsing. Reports indicate that the shaking from the West Indonesian earthquake could be felt a few hundred miles away in the Indonesian capital of Jakarta, as well as, in Malaysian and Singapore.
