Prosecutors allege that the dad, Cameron John Brown, murdered his 4-year-old daughter, Lauren Sarene Key, by throwing her off a 120 foot cliff at Inspiration point in Rancho Palos Verdes in 2000 in order to avoid paying $1000 per month in child support payments to his daughter's mother.
As for the dad's motive for throwing his daughter off a cliff, prosecutors argued that Cameron John Brown never wanted his daughter and urged the girl's mother to get an abortion after she told him she was pregnant. When the mother refused, prosecutors say the dad tried unsuccessfully to have the mother fired from her job and deported back to England.
Finally, after struggling to make the $1000 per month child support payments, prosecutors argue that the dad decided killing his daughter would be an easier way out.
Investigator's first became suspicious of Cameron John Brown after he showed little emotion while being questioned by Los Angeles County Sheriff's investigators about how his daughter fell off the cliff. The dad denied throwing his daughter off the Rancho Palos Verdes cliff and advised Sheriff's investigators that his daughter slipped and fell while throwing rocks off the 120 foot cliff. There were no witnesses to the incident.
Now, a second jury hearing the evidence couldn't reach a unanimous verdict as to whether this Rancho Palos Verdes dad intentionally murdered his daughter by throwing her off the cliff or if this was just a tragic accident. In any case, two hung juries, the last of which deadlocked at 6-6, is not an encouraging sign for the prosecution and the strength of their case against the dad.
