Cedar Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles is under investigation for exposing patients to extremely high radiation overdoses resulting in patients losing their hair and reddening of their skin. The Cedar Sinai radiation overdose investigation focuses on more than 200 patients who were given CT brain scans used to diagnose strokes over the past 18 months.

According to the California Department of Health, the Cedar Sinai radiation overdose investigation was set into motion back in August when a patient reported "patchy hair loss" after a CT brain scan.

Since "patchy hair loss" is not a usual side effect of this procedure, Cedar Sinai opened up its own investigation. What they found was shocking. The CT brain scan machine had been set to the higher dosage level since February of 2008. As such, all 206 patients who received CT brain scans in that time were exposed to eight times the normal radiation dosage levels delivered during the scan.

As a result of the Cedar Sinai radiation overdose findings, the FDA sent a nationwide alert to all hospitals to check their CT brain scan procedures and settings warning that undetected overdoses put "patients at increased risk for long-term radiation effects."

The California Department of Health has now opened up their own investigation into the Cedar Sinai radiation overdoses. At this time, it is unclear if machine settings were the result of medical negligence or a deliberate act intended to expose these patients to radiation overdoses.
