Authorities in California took another step forward in the fight against Medicare fraud as 18 people were arrested and indicted today in connection $25 million Southern California Medicare fraud scheme. Prosecutors allege the massive Southern California Medicare fraud scheme was the creation of 30-year-old Michael Martinez of Long Beach and involved individuals linked to the Santa Ana based Brook Street Gang.

Michael Martinez and six others were officially indicted today with conspiracy to commit healthcare fraud and for making false statements to the government in connection with the $25 million Medicare fraud scheme being operated out of Southern California.

In a statement released by prosecutors, "Martinez allegedly recruited relatives and individuals linked to the Santa Ana-based Brook Street Gang to act as straw owners for four fraudulent DME companies," who fraudulently order power wheelchairs, hospital beds and other equipment.

Officials see today's arrests and indictments as a major achievement in the ongoing battle against Medicare fraud in California.
