Almost two months after his arrest on a felony child molestation warrant, famous Hollywood director Roman Polanski was granted bail by the Swiss Court. The Swiss Criminal Court granted Polanski's bail request on the condition that he post a $4.5 million cash bail and wear a 24 hour electronic monitoring bracelet.
The Swiss Criminal Court initially denied Roman Polanski's bail applications. However, in reversing its previous ruling and granting Roman Polanski's release, the Swiss Criminal Court said it was confident that the large cash bail and the electronic monitoring would compel Polanski to remain at his chalet in the Swiss resort of Gstaad.
Despite still viewing Roman Polanski as a high flight risk, the Swiss Criminal Court stated:
"The 76-year-old appellant is married and the father of two minors. It can be assumed that as a responsible father he will, especially in view of his advanced age, attach greater importance to the financial security of his family than a younger person."
This is truly unbelievable. If this were any other convicted child rapist who had been a fugitive from justice for more than 30 years, no amount of money, electronic monitoring or security would convince a court to grant bail. Celebrity truly has its privileges.
In 1977, Roman Polanski plead guilty in Los Angeles to having sex with a 13-year-old girl. However, "sex with a 13-year-old girl" hardly describes what he actually did to that girl. Grand jury testimony details how he got this girl drunk and gave her a quaalude before he forcibly performed oral, vaginal and anal sex on the young girl. All the while, the girl repeatedly asked him to stop and let her go home.
Fearing he was going to be sent to prison, Polanski skipped out on his sentencing and fled to France where he has continued to make Academy Award winning films and live the life of a celebrity. In 1978, a warrant was issued for his arrest. France does not extradite foreign nationals that retain the death penalty.
On September 26, Roman Polanski was arrested by Swiss authorities as he tried to enter the Switzerland to attend the Zurich Film Festival where he was set to receive a lifetime achievement award.
The decision by the Swiss Court to grant Roman Polanski bail has no effect on the decision as to whether he should be extradited back to the United States to face sentencing on the child molestation charges. For now, Roman Polanski has been ordered to remain in jail for 10 days to allow time for the Swiss Government to file an appeal of the court's order granting Roman Polanski bail.
