The word Email has been banned in French language. According to Searchenginewatch.com "Email has finally been banned in France. That doesn't mean you'll be forced to use IM, SMS or Twitter to communicate online."
However, who banned the word email in French is not known, probably the linguistic committee or something similar.
While I love the French culture, I don't understand the desire of changing universal words such as email to Courriel as the world population lives in a global electronic village. It's interesting to see if the French youth will pick up on Courriel. I guess the nationalistically inclined youth may.
Let's see if the French may come up with new words not only for Email but also for SMS, Twitter, DIGG, Facebook or even Internet. But for now, the bottom line is that the word Email in French is Courriel.
Courriel
I think the reason for this particular change is that the French word 'email' (pronounced ay-mye) means 'enamel', and has been around for centuries. That was way too confusing. But for e-mail, a lot of French people just use the word 'mail' (or even mele) which they pronounce 'mell'.
