The National Ballet of Canada’s summer mixed programme opens on June 13 and includes Alberta Ballet’s The Fiddle and The Drum, presented at the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts as part of Toronto's second annual Luminato – Toronto Festival of Arts & Creativity. Also on the programme are the second detail & Etudes & Five Brahms Waltzes in the Manner of Isadora Duncan.

The Fiddle and The Drum is a collaboration between renowned singer and songwriter Joni Mitchell and Alberta Ballet Artistic Director Jean Grand-Maitre. Performed by 28 dancers from Alberta Ballet, the work features nine songs from Ms. Mitchell's musical repertoire. The ballet incorporates Ms. Mitchell’s music and artwork with Mr. Grand-Maitre’s choreography.

the second detail is quintessential William Forsythe and as with much of his work, it has evolved since it was first created for the National Ballet in 1991. Jill Johnson, former Second Soloist with the National Ballet, is setting the current version of the second detail on the company. Ms. Johnson travels internationally staging Mr. Forsythe’s work and presently resides in New York City.

Harald Lander's Etudes is an affectionate tribute to the art form of classical dance using the routine of a ballet class.

After 22 years with The National Ballet of Canada, Principal Dancer Jennifer Fournier retires at the end of the 07/08 season. For her farewell season, Ms. Fournier will perform Sir Frederick Ashton's Five Brahms Waltzes in the Manner of Isadora Duncan. Canadian ballet legend Lynn Seymour came to Toronto from London, England earlier this year to teach the solo to Ms. Fournier. -- www.national.ballet.ca
