A cross between Tim Burton, David Lynch and the Brothers Grimm, this series of fractured fairy tales blurs the lines between what is performed and what is projected.

Merging real life with fiction and film, Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea features the deliciously sinister tales of acclaimed storyteller Suzanne Andrade.

From a hapless cat’s countdown of his nine unfortunate deaths to seamen, STDs and Satan in many guises – this is dark and deadly humour with a Weimar cabaret twist.

Seamlessly combined with the animation of Paul Bill Barritt and accompanied live on piano by Lillian Henley, Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea is a gorgeous homage to silent cinema, mime and music hall.

Scratchy pencil drawings morph into vintage film sequences as performers Esme Appleton and Andrade use the rolling film as a set, crafting noirish accounts of gun-toting gingerbread men, cross-dressing devils and a menacing pair of homicidal twins.

Developed by 1927 at London’s Battersea Arts Centre, Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea won five awards at Edinburgh including a Fringe First, a Herald Angel and a Total Theatre Award for Best Emerging Company.
