One of the great events in sports begins today with the US Open golf tournament, which in theory at least, a tournament of the masses that anyone could qualify for.
I caddied for a few summers on a golf course in the Wheeling area and worked there as a groundskeeper for a couple others, took up golf then and grew to love the sport. It's been a few years since I've picked up a club though. Life has kind of gotten in the way but I still follow the sport.
Here is my US Open golf story. One day I caddied for a guy who came into town for one of the local amateur tournaments. I'd never seen this guy before but being familiar with all the hotshot locals I knew none of them would beat him. So I told the other caddies this guy was a sure thing to win, which he did. Several years ago I'm going through the tee times for the US Open and see him listed. After a little checking around I see he's now a club pro around Lancaster. He made it through some of the qualifying this year but didn't make the Open.

On Oct. 4, 1895, the first U.S. Open Championship was conducted by the United States Golf Association on the nine-hole course of Newport (R.I.) Golf and Country Club.
The first U.S. Open was considered something of a sideshow to the first U.S. Amateur, which was played on the same course and during the same week. Both championships had been scheduled for September but were postponed because of a conflict with a more established Newport sports spectacle, the America’s Cup yacht races.
