Orlando Orchestra Kicks Off Sounds Of Summer Series

The Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra proudly begins its 2008 Sounds of Summer Series with a dynamic program dedicated to the musical mind of Johannes Brahms. The program, Obsessions of Johannes Brahms, is held on Monday, June 16, 2008 at 7:00 PM in the Margeson Theater in the Lowndes Shakespeare Center, 812 E. Rollins Street, Orlando.

Obsessions of Johannes Brahms was conceptualized by Music Director Christopher Wilkins, who also hosts, conducts and performs on piano during the program. Known for his entertaining and informative discourse, Wilkins enhances the program with insight about the musical Brahms we know, and also sheds light on what lurked beneath the composer's stoic exterior.

Included on the program are Brahms's Hungarian Dance Nos. 5 & 6; the Allegro from his Clarinet Quintet in B minor; and a selection from Sonata for Clarinet and Piano in F minor. Also on the program are Schubert's Shepherd on the Rock, Clara Schumann's Romance in A minor for Solo Piano and Dvorak's Slavonic Dances, op. 46, Nos. 4 & 5.

Performing on the program are Tamas Kocsis and Joni Hanze-Bjella, violins; Melissa Swedberg, viola; Ronald Gardiner, cello; Nikolay Blagov, clarinet; Keiko Andrews, piano; and Kimberly Saunders Randall, soprano. -- www.orlandophil.org
