Playwright Michael Bassett creates heartfelt and moving characters that
are propelled through his scripts with spot-on dialogue and twisted
situations, often incorporating video and musical elements to heighten
the theatrical experience. 4Play evokes a gallery showing by a visual
artist where an audience member can experience signature elements of
the playwright’s style.
The four plays are:
Bleach - A man in a coma leaves a woman alone….for awhile. Coffee for all.
Devoured - A couple invite a stranger into their home for a surprise encounter.
The Last Judgment - An ambiguous man in a doctor’s waiting room gets right to the soul of the matter.
Cake - Pets, guns, wedding cake. What could go wrong?
13Carat has invited four talented Chicago theatre directors to stage one of these plays. Sarah Gabel, chairperson of the newly formed Department of Fine and Performing Arts at Loyola University Chicago, will direct Bleach with actors Christopher Genovese, Dan Krall and Jana Liles.
Michael S. Pieper, faculty member of Second City and former Artistic Director of Boxer Rebellion Theatre, will direct Devoured, featuring actors Gillian Bellinger, Chris Bragg and Patrick Walsh.
Michael Bassett will direct The Last Judgment with Matthew Kerns, James Yeater and Mary Anne Bowman.
Aaron Todd Douglas, popular actor/director and a founding ensemble member of Congo Square Theatre Company, will direct Cake featuring actors Annie DiMaria, Linsey Falls and Jim Hicks.
The evening features original music by Andy Scott Rosen (aka Goat) accompanying videos created by Bassett which function like a Greek chorus to set the scene for the stage action. The scenic design is by Timothy Mann, costumes by Sarah Najera and lighting design by Michael Smallwood with stage manager, Ana Espinosa. -- www.theatrebuildingchicago.org
