Portland Orchestra Announces Independence Pops Concerts

The Portland Symphony Orchestra is delighted to announce that Robert Moody will conduct the four outdoor Independence Pops performances in Maine beginning June 30. An exhilarating summertime tradition in southern Maine not to be missed, the concerts will be held this year again at Shawnee Peak in Bridgton (June 30), Thomas Point Beach in Brunswick (July 1), Goodall Park in Sanford (July 2) and Fort Williams Park in Cape Elizabeth (July 3). All concerts begin at 7:30 p.m.

Already a significant presence after his introductory performances with the orchestra as Music Director Designate, Moody will commence his official role as Music Director when the “designate” is dropped from his title on July 1.

The Independence Pops program this year will also feature soprano Jenn Raithel-Newman. A versatile talent, Raithel-Newman has become a sought after performer in Pops and Classics concerts alike, and has been praised for her delivery of “powerful and emotional performances.” Making her home in Arizona, Raithel-Newman and Moody have worked together at the Winston-Salem Symphony.

This year’s production will feature patriotic favorites including “America, the Dream Goes On” by John Williams, a musical portrait of Irving Berlin and more, and as always it will conclude with Tchaikovsky’s monumental Overture to 1812 followed by a spectacular fireworks finale. Pre-concert music at Fort Williams Park will be provided by Maine Suzuki Association. -- www.portlandsymphony.com
