Memorial Art Gallery director Grant Holcomb and Nazareth College Arts Center director Lindsay Reading Korth are pleased to announce a second year of the “Across Borders Rochester” community-wide partnership. In its highly successful first year, the initiative explored contemporary Latin American and Latino art and culture. This year, the focus will be much broader—the arts and culture of the entire eastern hemisphere.
Anchor events for “Across Borders East” are
• Lecture on China in the 20th and 21st centuries by Professor Nevan Fisher of Nazareth College (May 1, 2008 at MAG)
• Tradition in Transition: Russian Icons in the Age of the Romanovs and Subverting the Sacred: The Face of Lenin (October 5, 2008–January 4, 2009 at MAG)
• Russian Family Day (November 16, 2008 at MAG)
• Gala Opening Celebration: Garth Fagan Dance world premiere set to live music by the Ying Quartet and performance by Rochester City Ballet (February 6 & 7, 2009 at Nazareth College Arts Center)
• The National Acrobats of China (March 22, 2009 at Nazareth College Arts Center)
• Russian National Ballet Theatre performing Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake (April 4, 2009 at Nazareth College Arts Center)
• Rochester City Ballet performing two Russian classics—Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf (January 31 & February 1, 2009) and Stravinsky’s Firebird (May 2 & 3, 2009)—at Nazareth College Arts Cente
• Asian Pacific American Heritage Family Day (May 31, 2009 at MAG)
“Across Borders East” will encompass these and other events that address issues of interest to Rochester’s diverse ethnic communities as well as the community at large. “One of the exciting aspects of this collaboration is that there is no consensus on what is east and what is west,” says Rachel DeGuzman, Nazareth College Arts Center marketing and publicity manager.
“It’s wonderful to see a good idea like last year’s Across Borders blossom into Across Borders East,” says Grant Holcomb. “Once again, our collaboration with the Nazareth College Arts Center will enliven Rochester’s dynamic cultural life.” “This is an exciting year for the Nazareth College Arts Center, which is set to reopen the newly renovated stage in February 2009,” says Lindsay Korth. “The Arts Center has a long history presenting global and breaking boundaries with cultural interchange. I am delighted that we will once again join with the MAG.” -- mag.rochester.edu
