San Antonio City Manager Sheryl Sculley sought and obtained the resignation Friday of Parks and Recreation Department Director Malcolm Matthews following a series of controversies and public missteps.

"Sculley declined to pin her decision on any specific issue, but said it was based on Matthews' “overall performance” over an extended period of time. She said she was unable to discuss recent turmoil involving the department — including problems with the city's summer camp program and questions raised by the San Antonio Express-News over playground equipment — because the decision involved a personnel matter."

Could it have been lying about having inspections? Or, the fact that there was dangerous equipment in the parks?

Earlier The San Antonio Express News was all over this story. Good job!

"Reacting to growing public criticism, San Antonio Mayor Phil Hardberger and City Manager Sheryl Sculley on Wednesday announced a "fresh round of comprehensive inspections" of all 114 city playgrounds.

"The announcement comes after a San Antonio Express-News report Sunday showed the playgrounds this year had received their first in-depth safety inspections since 2003, and that those inspections had highlighted numerous problems, some serious, at primarily older playgrounds.

"The newspaper also found that the city had allowed problems at some playgrounds identified in the inspections to go unaddressed for months, raising the risk of injuries and, potentially, lawsuits. The public was not made aware of the unsafe conditions."
