Blackpool's Grand Theatre Junior Academy step up to the main stage for the very first time with the inspirational new play Thursday's Child on Sunday 29th June.
Loosely based around the famous nursery rhyme Monday's Child; Thursday's Child tells the fascinating story of five children who each face some form of adversity at birth and the journey each child takes to overcome these hardships.
Thursday's Child is an original piece which was written especially for the group by the group themselves, under the expert guidance of Academy Director Paul David-Gough, following a number of sessions exploring a number of themes.
Paul David-Gough explains: "We started the whole project off with a blank piece of paper and the idea that this is the way we all enter the world; knowing nothing and very impressionable. We discussed the possibilities of five babies and how their lives could differ and ended up with an amazing play about hope and strength of character.
"Since the Junior Academy first formed in 1997 they have produced almost twenty productions, commissioned new plays and have participated in Puppet festivals, but not yet had the chance to experience the main stage. This opportunity has traditionally fallen to the senior members of the academy. This production will allow the junior members of the academy to experience a different style of performance.
"There's a huge difference in playing to sixty four people in the Studio and playing on a larger stage in the main theatre. Everyone's performance needs to increase in size and their voices have to reach the back of the auditorium, as opposed to twenty or thirty feet in the studio. The adjustment these young performers need to make provides invaluable experience for the future." -- www.blackpoolgrand.co.uk
