Nicolas Sarkozy was about to board a flight leaving Israel after a three day visit - when the sound of a gunshot caused his bodyguards to usher him quickly onto the plane.
Israel's Prime Minister and President, who were farewelling him on the tarmac, were also rushed into their armoured cars.
But police said this was not an assassination attempt; after a border policeman's body was found with a single bullet wound - apparently self inflicted.
It is now being investigated whether the officer's gun accidentally discharged, or if he had committed suicide.
