'The King and I' Kicks Off Dayton Film Series

Victoria Theatre Association’s 2008 Michelob Ultra Cool Films series kicks off with the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical The King and I, June 27 – 29, at the Victoria Theatre.

Rodgers and Hammerstein's Broadway musical, adapted from Margaret Landon's fact-based novel and the 1946 film Anna and the King of Siam, made a spectacularly successful move to the silver screen in the Yul Brynner tour de force The King and I. Director Walter Lang turned The King and I, one of the most popular musicals in stage and cinema history, into a dizzyingly bountiful Technicolor feast.

Reprising the role that he polished to perfection on stage, Brynner plays the blustering, headstrong Siamese potentate who meets his match in the form of Anna Leonowens (Deborah Kerr), the prim and proper English widow he has hired to oversee the rearing of his huge, unruly flock of children.

Kerr contributes a dynamic performance that is every bit the equal of Brynner's transcendent, career-defining turn, for which he won an Academy Award. The score, which also garnered an Oscar, includes three perennial favorite show tunes: "I Whistle a Happy Tune," "Getting to Know You," and "Shall We Dance?"

The Michelob Ultra Cool Films series brings the golden age of cinema to life at the Victoria Theatre during June, July and August. Upcoming movie classics include: Lawrence of Arabia, July 4 – 6; Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, July 11 – 13; Cool Hand Luke, July 18 – 20; Little Women, July 25 – 27; Doctor Zhivago, August 1 – 3; Audrey Hepburn Weekend ( Sabrina, Charade, Roman Holiday), August 8 – 10; Hello, Dolly!, August 15 – 17; A Hard Day’s Night, August 22 – 24. Films are shown at 7:30 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, and 3 p.m. on Sundays in the comfort of the air-conditioned Victoria Theatre. Guests may enjoy free popcorn and soda in the lobby, beginning one hour prior to showtime, an NCR Mighty Wurlitzer organ concert beginning 30 minutes prior to showtime, and a classic cartoon just before the movie. -- www.victoriatheatre.com
