Holiday At Queensland Museum Is Child's Play

Make your own Indigenous version of tic tac toe and use traditional methods to paint your own story at Cobb and Co. Museum's school holiday program, Kabul Dreaming.

Museum Director Deborah Tranter said Kabul is the traditional word for carpet snake, which is the ancestral totem for local Aboriginal groups and this holiday program is the Museum's NAIDOC Week celebration."

"Kabul Dreaming will provide the opportunity for children of all backgrounds to celebrate NAIDOC week by participating in hands on activities such as playing indigenous games, learning local Aboriginal words and using traditional decorating styles," Mrs Tranter said.

The program will be held each weekday from June 30 to July 11 and sessions run for an hour, commencing at 10.30am and 12:00pm.

There will be a different theme for each week and week 1, which will run from June 30 to July 4, will be based on Aboriginal games. Participants will learn how to play Burguu Matya, an Indigenous version of tic tac toe and also make and decorate their own version of the game.

In week 2, from July 7 to 11, children will hear the story of Kabul the carpet snake, learn about Aboriginal totems and symbols and use traditional methods to tell their own story in pictures.

Other activities include identifying animal tracks and learning some of the local Aboriginal language.

There are no bookings, but there is a limit of 25 children per session, so those wishing to attend any of the sessions are advised to arrive early to ensure a place.

Designed for children aged 5 to 12 years, children must be supervised by an adult.

Entry to Cabul Dreaming is $7.50 per child per session, which includes their admission. Accompanying adults can use their Toowoomba City Library card or The Workshops Rail Museum membership card to obtain free admission or entry will cost $7.50.

The Cobb and Co. Museum is a campus of the Queensland Museum and is open daily 10am – 4pm, except Good Friday, ANZAC Day and Christmas Day. Members of The Workshops Rail Museum receive free entry on presentation of their membership card and thanks to Toowoomba Regional Council; entry is free on presentation of a Toowoomba City Library card. -- www.qm.qld.gov.au
