Long Wharf Theatre Kicks Off Summer Season

Long Wharf Theatre, under the leadership of Gordon Edelstein, Artistic Director, and Joan Channick, Managing Director, begins its summer schedule with the presentation of a Windwood Theatricals production of Altar Boyz from July 8 through September 13 on the Mainstage.

Altar Boyz will be followed by presentations of Late Nite Catechism on Stage II from July 24 through Sept. 13, and Defending the Caveman on the Mainstage from Sept. 17 through Oct. 12.

Altar Boyz is a musical-comedy spoof about a fictitious Christian boy-band on the last night of their national "Raise the Praise" tour. The Boyz - five ultra-talented heartthrobs from Ohio - are lead singer Matthew (the pretty-boy hunk and leader of the pack), Mark (a sensitive young man with a deep faith in Cher), Luke (a bad-boy with an "interest" in communion wine), Juan (a hot-blooded crooner with a passion for pretty girls) and Abraham (a nice Jewish boy, who's not quite sure how he ended up here . . . though his mother would sure like to know).

As they perform their signature hits featuring lyrics like "Girl, You Make Me Wanna Wait" and "Jesus Called Me On My Cell Phone", soul-wrenching secrets come tumbling out with hilarious results. The Boyz begin to question their faith in each other, and learn if fate is really holding them together or if it's just their extra-firm hair gel.

A musical for the entire family, Altar Boyz is 90 minutes of pure fun and the winner of the 2005 Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Off-Broadway Musical. The show is also one of the longest running new musical comedies to open in New York in years.

Altar Boyz recently completed its first national tour. Altar Boyz enjoyed its Asian premiere in Seoul, South Korea, and its European premiere in Budapest.

The production will be directed by Tye Banks, based on original direction by Stafford Arima. Lou Castro will do the choreography, based on original choreography by Christopher Gattelli. -- www.longwharf.org
