The 49-year-old pop music star and occasional movie star has starting seeking advice from famous divorce attorney Fiona Shackleton, who represented Paul McCartney in his divorce from model Heather Mills.
Guy Ritchie, 39, is thought to be consulting with Forsters, a lesser-known London law firm, the Times reported.
A spokesman for Madonna declined to comment.
Shackleton, called "The Steel Magnolia" for her hardheaded style - also represented Prince Charles in his divorce with the late Princess Diana.
Madonna and Ritchie did not have a prenuptial agreement, according to the Times, which could potentially cost Madonna up to 50% of her assets. Madonna, who reportedly met Shackleton for a preliminary meeting in April, is believed to be worth about $600 million.
Known more for her erotic music and videos than her movies, Madonna has had her time on the big screen. She starred in the 1985 comedy "Desperately Seeking Susan", and in the 1986 crime drama "Shanghai Surprise" with then husband Sean Penn.
She has also starred in "Who's That Girl" (1987), "Bloodhounds Of Broadway" (1989) with Jennifer Grey, "A League Of Their Own" (1986) with Tom Hanks, Geena Davis and Rosie O'Donnell, "Body Of Evidence" (1993), and "The Next Best Thing" (2006) with Benjamin Bratt.
Her breakout role came starring with Antonio Banderas in the dramatic biographical "Evita" (1996), the hit musical based on the life of Evita Duarte, a B-picture Argentinian actress who eventually became the wife of Argentinian president and dictator Juan Perón, and the most beloved and hated woman in Argentina.
Of course we can never forget her erotic dream sequence with Wayne and Garth on Saturday Night Live with Mike Myers and Dana Carvey.
