Greece tightens ferry safety measures

Greece has announced a raft of measures to make ferry services safer. Ships' captains will be given extra training in navigating shallow waters.

Crew members will be evaluated every year and will face heavy fines if they cause accidents or collisions.

The measures come after an incident last weekend on a ferry to the Island of Chios. Almost 500 passengers had to be evacuated by rescue boats after the ferry ran against rocks in the Aegean Sea.

This is the third incident involving a Greek ferry this year. - By Radio Netherlands, Copyright.
