
Christopher Malcolm and David Ian are delighted to announce principal casting for the World Premiere production of FLASHDANCE – The Musical, based on the Paramount Pictures film. FLASHDANCE – The Musical will play The Mayflower Theatre, Southampton from 5-9 August 2008.
Taking the lead of Alex Owens will be Victoria Hamilton-Barritt. Victoria’s West End theatre credits include “Mamma Mia!”, “Fame” and “Desperately Seeking Susan”. Other theatre credits include Stephanie in “Saturday Night Fever” and Anita in “West Side Story” on tour.
Choreographer Arlene Phillips said “After searching the country high and low and seeing hundreds of girls for the part of Alex, I suddenly remembered the stunning Victoria Hamilton-Barritt who had played a leading role in Saturday Night Fever in the West End and invited her to audition. She is the only girl who we believe can sing, act and dance this role to the standard we need’
Bruno Langley will play Jimmy. Bruno is probably best known for playing Todd Grimshaw in “Coronation Street”. His other credits include “Doctor Who” and the film “The League of Gentlemen’s Apocalypse”. His theatre credits include “Night Sky” at the Bristol Old Vic with Christopher Eccleston. Bernie Nolan will play Hannah Owens. Bernie is best known as the lead singer of The Nolan Sisters. Her theatre credits include Mrs Johnstone in “Blood Brothers”, both in the West End and on tour and “Mum’s the Word” on tour. Television credits include playing Diane Murray in “Brookside” for two years and Sergeant Shelagh Murphy in ITV1’s “The Bill”. Noel Sullivan is best known as one fifth of the record-breaking pop band Hear’say. His musical theatre credits include Danny in “Grease” and Nick in “Fame”.

Set in Pittsburgh, USA, FLASHDANCE – The Musical tells the story of 18 year old Alex, a welder by day and ‘flashdancer’ by night, whose dream is to obtain a place at the prestigious Shipley Dance Academy. This unique musical about holding on to your dreams and love against all the odds features an iconic score including “Maniac”, “Manhunt”, “Gloria”, “I Love Rock and Roll” and the Academy Award winning title track “Flashdance – What a Feeling”.
Based on the Paramount Pictures film (screenplay by Tom Hedley and Joe Eszterhas, story by Tom Hedley) FLASHDANCE - The Musical is written by Tom Hedley and Robert Cary, with music by Robbie Roth and lyrics by Robert Cary & Robbie Roth. It will be directed by Kenny Leon and choreographed by Arlene Phillips with set and costume design by Paul Farnsworth, lighting design by Jason Taylor and orchestrations and musical supervision by Phil Edwards.
