Lamb’s Players To Operate Horton Grand Theatre

Lamb’s Players Theatre and the Horton Grand Hotel announced today that they have entered into an agreement under which LPT will operate the Hotel’s Horton Grand Theatre.

Located in San Diego’s Gaslamp district, on Fourth Avenue between Island Avenue and J St, the Horton Grand Theatre is a charming, intimate space with seating for 230. LPT will take the next two months to refresh the theatre with new carpet, paint and equipment.

LPT, which presents a year-round Season of plays at its resident theatre in Coronado, is planning a series of productions at the Horton Grand. First up will be an open-ended run of a freshen version of the theatre’s own hit musical, BOOMERS, the musical revue of a generation, to preview July 2nd.

The Hotel’s General Manager, Paula Ellis, said, “We are excited to have a company with the experience and reputation of the Lamb’s Players working with us. This will add another bright light to downtown’s vibrant cultural scene. We are also looking forward to joint projects with LPT including special seasonal celebrations, dining and hotel packages.”

Lamb’s Players Theatre first used the space back in 1994 when it was known as the Hahn Cosmopolitan Theatre. The company went on to present seven different productions there.

“We’re thrilled to be back at this great little theatre” said Robert Smyth, LPT’s Producing Artistic Director. “For many years we were producing at the Lyceum Theatre in Horton Plaza, but limited availability and other logistical challenges have made is less viable for us. We’ve long needed a secure second space and the Horton Grand Theatre is a perfect fit.”

The Horton Grand Theatre was built in 1986 by the Gaslamp Quarter Theatre through the vision of Managing Producer, Kit Goldman and her husband Don Pearson. For many years it was known as the Hahn Cosmopolitan Theatre, in honor of downtown developer and visionary, Ernie Hahn. The Rose family, current owners of the Horton Grand Hotel, purchased the theatre in 1997. For the past 10 years the theatre was home to the long-running comedy, Triple Espresso. -- www.lambsplayers.org
