Sci-Fi Future Explored At Science Museum

A sci-fi future of cyborgs"Å¡ human clones and mind control over machines will be explored in a one-off discussion event at the Science Museum's Dana Centre on Wednesday 10 January.

Our Sci-Fi Future will take inspiration from films such as A.I."Å¡ The Island and The Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind to provoke discussion and debate over what route science could take us down. This free event at the Dana Centre - the Science Museum's adults-only venue for discussing contemporary science issues - will look at a range of possible futures such as whether computers could become more intelligent than humans"Å¡ or if genetic engineering could be used for every day human enhancement"Å¡ rather than medical needs.

As a further inspiration for debate there will be one of the amazing objects from the Science Museum's NEURObotics"¦the future of thinking? exhibition. On display will be the Berlin Brain-Computer Interface cap"š a 'mental typewriter' that allows a person to write with a computer using thought alone.

Experts will be on hand to map out what they think the possibilities are for the future of the human race.

Speaking at the event will be:

"¢ Dr Anders Sandberg from the Future of Humanity Institute at Oxford University"š talking about technology and the Mind

"¢ Professor Max Bramer"š chairman of the British Computer Society's specialist group on artificial intelligence"š based at Portsmouth University

"¢ Dr Ray Noble"š expert on reproductive ethics from University College London.

Event organiser"š Rachel Bowden"š from the Science Museum"š said: "The makers of sci-fi films regularly imagine what the future holds for the human race"š and some of the scenarios are surprisingly close to being science fact. This event at the Dana Centre will explore what the real possibilities are for our future"š and make us think about what kind of sci-fi future we actually want." -- www.sciencemuseum.org.uk
