By the end of the First World War the Imperial War Museum held the most important collection of contemporary British art in the country. Augmented by subsequent war artist schemes, the collection now offers a fascinating insight into twentieth century warfare both on the front line and at home.
For the first time, this catalogue reveals all 1,870 of the oil paintings, many of which will be seen for the first time. This includes important works of modern British art by artists such as Knight, the Nashes, Nevinson, Orpen, Sargent and Spencer, alongside more recent acquisitions.
Oil Paintings in Public Ownership in the Imperial War Museum is the eleventh catalogue to be published by the Public Catalogue Foundation. The lead sponsor of this catalogue is RAB Capital plc, the investment management company founded by Philip Richards and Michael Alen-Buckley. The catalogue has also been supported by Lloyd Dorfman, Shaftesbury plc and the P. F. Charitable Trust.
A small selection of Imperial War Museum paintings will be on show at Christie's, King Street, from 15th January for five days. -- www.iwm.org.uk
