As part of the 2006 Rembrandt year celebrations, the Rijksmuseum will be presenting its entire collection of 60 drawings by Rembrandt, in two parts.
The collection is one of the most important Rembrandt collections in the world. The works are rarely put on public display due to the light-sensitive nature of the drawings. In connection with the exhibition, a new publication will be released in the Rijksmuseum's "dossier" series: Rembrandt and the art of drawing.
Part I presents Rembrandt as a drawer of mainly Biblical scenes. In each case, it is as if Rembrandt actually relives the experience depicting the essential moment with only a few lines and scrawls. Rembrandt the Storyteller is an intimate introduction to one of the greatest artists of the Dutch Golden Age.
In the second part of this dual exhibition we see how Rembrandt observed the world around him with unremitting intensity and recorded it in an incredibly subtle manner, whether his work depicted a mother and child, a group of exotically clad Orientals, a lounging lion or an ordinary cow in a cowshed.
Rembrandt, the observer in one big invitations to look and explore the 17th-century everyday reality through the eyes of Rembrandt himself.
The Exhibition will be on view through January 23, 2007-- www.rijksmuseum.nl
