British researchers conducted a study on men who are at risk of prostate cancer. These men take either 14 oz of broccoli or 14 oz of peas per week for 12 months as part of their diet.
The study found that those who were on broccoli rich diet had a change on gene expression than those who were on a pea diet.
Accordingly, the change was due to the presence of GSTM1 gene caused by eating broccoli. The study theorizes that less quantity of cruciferous vegetables like broccoli can greatly affect gene expression.
It changes the cell signaling pathways which are considered routes from which transmission of information occurs through a molecular cascade that amplifies signals to the nucleus where the expression occurs.
Though this sound so scientific, the important thing is knowing that broccoli can protect men against prostate cancer.
