There is an extensive list in MSNBC's rundown of the next Batman 3 Villains, and the story does a nice job of breaking them down. But while they throw a couple of intriguing ideas out there (Talia al Ghul and Black Mask being my favorites from their list), they've missed some better choices.
Talia al Ghul's father, Ra's al Ghul, created the League of Assassins. The first guy to run that group was Ebeneezer Daark (I'd change the spelling to just "Dark"). He's a master assassin who is Batman's equal when it comes to meticulous planning and execution of ideas. I think he'd be a natural opponent.
Or, if you wanted to go more physical, you could bring Bane into the picture. If you wanted Batman 3 to face another, less-controlled, version of himself, bring in Anarky. I think there are numerous villains (or in Anarky's case, anti-villain) that fit into Nolan's concept of the Batman universe.
I do think that Catwoman will have to go by the wayside. The character was so devalued in that abomination of a movie that it needs more time to lessen the negative impact. And the Penguin...just doesn't work now.
The more I think about it, Anarky would make for a real interesting opponent. Imagine a Gotham where the economy is on the skids. People are committing robberies to make ends meet, to feed their families. Batman has to squash that kind of crime. But then you have Anarky, someone who stands up for the little guy. He sees the wealthy exploiting the rules to stay rich and those people stealing to survive as the victims.
It would cast Batman 3 in the awkward role of fighting to protect a flawed order. That's likely not where Nolan wants to go, but it'd sure get people to think.

#1 I think the guy who should
I think the guy who should be the new batman villian in the next batman is the guy who he saved from getting killed in the car accident, the one who new batman's identity and was going to try and blackmail him. He would make a good riddler. I think this is a good time to stay with the more traditional batman villians, but give them a serious and dark twist like Christopher Nolan did with Joker. No penguin or bane for now!
#2 to reply to the first comment
the guy wasnt the riddler. he was 2-face. but reports that johnny depp might do the riddler in b3
#3 Id love to see Solomon
Id love to see Solomon Grundy myself, particulary in a more gothic-horror type of screenplay. It could work well and be a departure from the normal "crime-villain" type of story.
#4 Talia al Ghul, with Bane as
Talia al Ghul, with Bane as her bodyguard!!
#5 Deacon Blackfire and The Hangman...
Deacon Blackfire was in a mini-series called "Batman: The Cult". He is presented as a religious fanatic who preaches to the homeless and drugs their free soup and bread, eventually convincing them to follow his lead. He wages a war against crime but this turns devious when eventually he's taken control of large parts of the city. Batman is now seen as a criminal and would be a likely target of the Cult.
The Hangman is a mysterious police killer in the comics, brutally murdering specific ones on various holidays. Each cop was someone who backed up Harvey Dent's political career. There are references to the children's game Hangman left at each crime scene. The true identity ends up being Sofia Falcone, daughter of the mob boss Carmine Falcone in Batman Begins.
Just two lesser known options that I think could make for a gritty looking movie and take the story in a wild new direction. Hopefully the director and screenwriters will take a close look at some of these unused villains before going with Riddler or Catwoman or typical choices.
#6 Thoughts on the next movie...
It would seem to me, in the movie we will begin without a batman. He will be considered an outlaw by the masses, and retired in Bruce Wayne's eyes as Gotham has straightened out and enjoying an upswing. The main villain will need to be someone who threatens that calm... I could see it being a political figure that on the outside is considered the best thing to come along, but inside has an evil agenda (it's too bad they have already used the Harvey Dent turn). Batman will have to be needed. Bane as a super right hand man is a great idea, but the main villain still eludes me. The Riddler could be an interesting choice (Batman would be the only person capable of figuring out his riddles), but turning him into the lovable villain would be a stretch, something thankfully Christopher Nolan has been pretty good at shying away from. What Batman needs for the next movie (and yes I understand I am mixing my DC universe criminals) is a Lex Luthor - from the Justice League cartoon series - type of I'm here to help you, as long as it furthers my own agenda criminal.
#7 reply to "thoughts on the next movie..."
they should use penquin... becuz in batman returns, he is running for mayor or wut ever. and everyone trusts him. i think it would be a good twist! also if tey do the same thing as last ime, they should have angelina jolie to play catwomen!!
#8 Micster is not smart
Micster - You obviously didn't get the ending of The Dark Knight or what Batman is about. Of course he will be Batman, they basically said it to your face that he will always be needed he will just have to hide in the shadows. how did you not get this?
#9 My idea for Batman 3
I would like to see the Penguin (Joe Pesci) return after it ends up that he lost a lot of money in the sting in TDK. I would rather see him as a Godfather type character than the freak he was in Batman Returns.
With Batman out of the picture he takes control of the underworld of Gotham, killing off a lot of the gangsters, Sal Maroni etc. Someone that he uses is a shy and introvert killer for hire known as the Riddler (Joachim Phoenix).
He along with the penguins men have been committing crimes throughout the city and leaving clues as to pin it on Batman. After a while Gordon starts to believe that maybe the batman has turned.
They both chase down the Riddler belieivng him to be the head of the crimeworld only to find out about the gangster penguin.
In the end I would have the Batman redeem himself and capture both the riddler & the penguin to have them locked up in arkham.
This would setup to reopen the franchise years down the line as I dont think Nolan & Bale would go for a 4th?
#10 I think Penguin is the obvious step forward
Like the before mention i believe the intelligent course for the Batman series is to involve Penguin re-invented to more of a king-pin/Lex Luthor type.
Nolan has done an incredible job at tying the mob world into the story line that it would be a beautiful extention of this to have a new in town crime boss. A crime boss that used to be in power but was carted off to Arkham..but in the first movie was released by Ra's Agul.
Chester Cobblepot rises up through the population as a Batman hater which plays off the conclusive statement after TDK which has Batman as a criminal and hated member of society because he "killed" Harvey Dent the white knight. Preying upon the batman hate this Penguin becomes wildly celebrated by the people...people that don't know the dark under current of Penguin crime boss. A man obsessed with penguins.
Somehow this new master mind Penguin becomes Mayor of Gotham an untouchable of sorts backed by the people and a threat to Gordon, the law system, and Batman because he's a mouth piece and a cold blooded mobster out to rid the city of law. A political figure that brings about legalized dissention into lawlessness not because he wants chaos but because he wants ulitmate power.
Nolan has created the thorough vein of political corruption/mobsters stuff... i doubt he would stray from this mindset in the future movie. Penguin is such a diabolical political figure and relevant today. I also believe this would progress batman's story of needing to become favored in the eyes of Gotham in which he is no longer. Fight corruption at it's highest level. And take down a real bad guy. I believe the complexity would be amazing. But who could play that kind of Penguin?
#11 Philip Seymour Hoffman end
Philip Seymour Hoffman end of story
#12 no no not right
i think we sholud go for some one who is not in any of the past moives i think that because we have just hade the joker and he poissiond the cop you know the part where he trys to kill harvy and kills the judjein the car . then i think the cop should become clay face
#13 To be honest, there are only
To be honest, there are only so many ways the 3rd(and final) film can go, because of the style of film Nolan has made the series. He's made the movies to a near realistic story. Bruce Wayne hates crime, trains in martial arts and fighting for 10 years, comes back and uses his money and company creations to fight crime, yet hide his identity because he is a vigilantly. the Joker in the Dark Knight was also brought as realistic character. Just a man, who is absolutely insane, yet brilliant, who wants to destroy Batman and run the city.
So, with the last 2 films villains(Ras al Ghul, Scarecrow, the Joker and Two-face) all being realistic characters(even Two-face who is just a man who lost his vision in good/bad after being scared while his fiancee was murdered). There are only a hand full of villains who can keep up with Nolans realistic image.
First possible Villian being the Riddler. He was commonly being a good, bad guy in the comics, helping the police solve crimes(often for his own fun) Edward Enigma could now come in as the new head investigator of Gotham Crime fighters, who are bent on finding the "cop killer" Batman, who is left as the believed murder in the end of the Black Knight. As Enigma gets closer to finding out Batman's identity, he could slowly lose grip on reality, believing himself to be a master mind, yet still not able to discover Batman identity. This could also be the time for the other villain, possibly the return of the Two-Face to tell him he knows who Batman is. In which Enigma gives up the good guy side to finally be able to find out who batman is, becoming the Riddler.
Now, along with the Riddler idea, as I said the idea of the Two-Face being brought back is also a possibility. As Two-Face didnt seemingly die in the Dark Knight, rather just suggested he did when showing Harvey Dents funeral. He could have escaped or even been locked away in Arhkam Asylum by Gordon.
Now the other possibility would be Talia al Ghul, creating a new League of Shadows, bent on destroying the town and getting revenge on Batman killing her father. This could also be the primary character with the Riddler, taking the place of the Two-Face's role in helping Edward Enigma find out who Batman is, maybe even bringing the Scarecrow back. This is a VERY possible villain role with the style Nolan uses.
Now the last real possibility I think it could be is Cat woman, as shes the last realistic(human) villain. However, the Cat Woman has been used and abused already. Especially the Cat woman movie with Halley Barry. Not to mention, she has no real way to jump into the story. And, it took the entire Batman Begins film to give a believable, liable reason as to why Bruce Wayne dresses up as Cat Woman already, so having a second vigilantly/villain running around as a Cat, would just not fit into Nolans Image.
The other villains such as Mr Freeze, Bane, Poison Ivy, the Penguin, Killer Croc, the Mad Hatter or Man-Bat are just too unrealistic for Nolan style films. Honestly, could you picture some guy that is half penguin or a guy with ice in blood that turns people to ice, or a girl who has poison in her veins running around in Batman Begins or the Dark Knight? Those are Tim Burton friendly characters, but not the realistic Image Nolan has created.
#14 i like wut ur saying
in b3, 2-face wont be dead yet. they will bring him back as harvey dent died...but 2-face is still alive!!!
#15 riddler depp yes. two-face
riddler depp yes. two-face is a must .peguin no maybe if nolan is up to it. catwoman good idea to bring more conflict to batman so maybe.
#16 Killer Croc
Make Killer Croc a murdering psychopath, a la Red Dragon's the Tooth Fairy, played by Ralph Fiennes. A serial killer, rapist type would be very very real.
#17 batman villians
I think Hugo Strange would be the best next villian for Batman 3, if you dont know about him look him up. hes a pycho path scientist that knows batmans secret identity, and he wants to be bruce wayne. they should also throw in the Revenge thing with the daughter of ru gual or whatever his names is from the first film.
#18 Killer Croc
Or perhaps he can be one of those strange and bizzare people that do crazy things to their bodies to look more reptilian. Such as splitting their tongue to look forked like a Snake's and filing their teeth to look sharp and pointy. Not to mention crazy tattoos. People like that do exist. They're still human but they've done drastic changes to their bodies. Killer Croc can be something like that. He can be a big serial killer.
#19 Harley Quinn
Hell hath no fury as a woman scorned.
Bring in the Joker's main psycho-squeeze to pick up where her beau left off.
#20 New Villain
We've seen just about all the villains from Batman over the years. I agree Anarky would be a great villain, one villain I would like to see that hasn't been remotely introduced in any of the movies is the Mad Hatter.
#21 hmmmmmmmmm
mad hatter is a good idea...maybe him and harley quinn
starting harley where the joker left off since they "date" or w.e
#22 Villains
The most obvious choices right now are Riddler and Penguin. Riddler is simialer to Joker in the sence of crazy and psychotic. But he is very different from him in the sence that he is much more collected, calmer, extremely wiley and intelligent, and unlike Joker he plans things step by step. He could at first be used by the GCPD to try and figure out who Batman is and ends up becoming so obsessed with finding out Batman's real identity that he vanishes and starts investigating his way. As for Penguin, erase any trace or image of Tim Burton's Penguin sand stay closer to what he was like in the comics. That means drop the whole using birds to commit his crimes but let him still have a fascination with rare and exotic birds just for show. Make him a corrupt business man and an illegal arms dealer. A powerful gangster. Penguin was always much more concerned with making money and staying in business. Phillip Seymour Hoffman could play that role well. Just give him a slightly longer nose but keep him civilized and sophisticated while at the same time hiding his corrupt tendencies. I would like to see Mr Freeze get a do over. Arnold absolutely ruined Freeze's character. It would be difficult but it can be done. I would like to see Deadshot. He could be another "hired gun" by the GCPD to try and take down Batman. Black Mask can be done as well. I would like to see just a quick cameo from the Joker. Possibly just a few seconds on-screen. Something like this: Riddler/Penguin get arrested and get shipped to Arkham they get thrown into a cell. They look at the cell across from theirs and see somebody sitting in a bench in the cell. The person's face is never shown. Just his sitting body with the name tag on his prison suit reading "Joker".
#23 Anarky
I really do thing that Anarky would be a formidable foe for Batman to encounter b/c they both fight for almost the same reason and yet they're opposites. Batman thinks that Anarky is fighting for crime to increase but is really trying to help otghers survive. Then there's Anarky...... He thinks that Batman is fighting to keep the rich safe (Wouldn't you like to lose all of your money or keep it?) when he's really fighting to keep the crime levels low so no one could get hurt or worse.
#24 Anarky is not a good choice,
Anarky is not a good choice, that what the TDK movie was about with the joker, they need a new theme for next, Anarky? not a good one, the best would be the riddler, it's a good choice on so many levels and there's so much u can do with the character, I would put another villain in there though, but the riddler would be the next villain, catwoman? halle berry killed that character, if the next film even touches that character....wouldn't be a good look
#25 At minimum, you have to match Ledger's performance.
It will be a tall order to match the break-through performance given by Heath Ledger as the Joker in "The Dark Knight". For this scenario alone you can rule out a lot of the "younger" less polished actors or actresses in Hollywood today. I personally imagine it will take a caliber of actor above and beyond what we're used to in Superhero flicks. That being said, my idea would be to write a dark, mentally twisted spin on the Riddler's character and have an actor with the range of Dainel Day Lewis play the part. If you've seen him as Bill the Butcher in "Gangs of New York" or as Daniel Plainview in "There Will Be Blood" you will know how dark and disturbing this man can go with his performances. Johnny Depp is a fine actor but he excells in parts that are quite "lite" by "The Dark Knight's" set standards. Daniel Day Lewis as the Riddler is truly the way to go.
#26 i would like to see th mad
i would like to see th mad hatter and i think johnny depp would pull that roll off
#27 man mad hatter is short lil
man mad hatter is short lil stupid man who doesnt need to be in a batman movie just the main villians
#28 The Next Batman 3 Villain
I would have to agree that Anarchy would be a great choice, but why not bring in Robin at this point and have them fight The Riddler or Scarecrow since he made an apperance in The Dark Night, and also put some scenes in of the Arkham Asylum. Also if you wanted something to really get the audience going what about making a team up that no one would think of happening, like Bane, Clayface, Killer Croc, and lets not forget Mr. Freeze, you could bring back Arnold Schwarzenegger for that role, just make him meaner and have a better suit!!!
#29 Batman's next villian
I think two-face and/or Mr.Freeze. Eventhough the Riddler is a good choice. Why not have one who's more uhh......basic like the ventriloquist guy.
#30 Villians
I definitely think that Two-Face should appear in the next Batman but I also don't think we have seen the last of the Joker either. This will be a tough role to take on after the spectacular portrayal by Ledger but given the two examples of the modern day Joker (Heath Ledger and Jack Nicholson)there is but one person who could pull off the in between role... Christian Slater. He is barely enough of a maniac to tie in with Ledger's brilliant performance and can just do the Nicholson voice so darn well. As for Catwoman and Penguin, I hope we don't have to see either of them any time soon.
