Kelvingrove Welcomes Top Photographer Home

An exhibition by the internationally renowned photographer Harry Benson has opened at Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum. This exciting homecoming exhibition of his work is designed to be a definitive retrospective of his 60 year career and will run through Sunday 14 September.

Harry Benson's career is a roll call of contemporary history and culture and some of the images which are appearing in the exhibition are now considered to be iconic works. Harry Benson – A photographer's journey is being held in the Royal Bank of Scotland Exhibition Gallery at Kelvingrove and is free.

On display are images of world leaders and events, icons of fashion, film and music and sporting greats. Among them are images from Harry's recent book, Harry Benson's Glasgow.

The exhibition is being staged by Culture and Sport Glasgow on behalf of the city. Harry Benson has photographed every American president from Eisenhower to George W Bush, was in the room as Richard Nixon resigned and was feet away when Bobby Kennedy was assassinated.

He has documented the building and the fall of the Berlin Wall, the funeral of Martin Luther King junior and the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans.

Bailie Liz Cameron, Chair of Culture and Sport Glasgow said, 'This exhibition of Harry Benson's work gives Glasgow the chance to welcome home one of its best known sons. 'His work is held in the highest regard around the world so I am particularly pleased we should get the chance to show so many of his iconic images at Kelvingrove.

'It's an amazing collection of his work taken from his 60 year career and it will enthral and delight everyone who sees it.' Harry Benson said, 'I was particularly pleased to have been asked to show some of my work in Glasgow and am delighted with the exhibition itself.
