"3 Para Tour In Photographs" At National Army Museum

The National Army Museum is delighted to be displaying a unique, visual account of the life of the soldiers during a critical phase of recent operations in Afghanistan. Corporal Mike Fletcher travelled through Afghanistan with The 3 Para Battle Group as the Media Operations Photographer for the Helmand Task Force.

Taken at close range, the photographs show the day to day life of the Army in Afghanistan, away from the media lense. The photographs show soldiers working closely with the Afghans; from informal discussions with village elders and meetings with local governors, to shots of soldiers mentoring the Afghan National Army and chatting with local children. The photographs show construction projects in action such as engineers laying ferry bridges through to behind the scenes shots of soldiers relaxing and eating roast
lunches.

Based at the British Camp in Lashkar Gah, Corporal Fletcher travelled widely with the Battle Group, taking him to the troubled towns of Sangin, Now Zad, and Musa Qual'eh, as well as joining patrols with the Provincial Reconstruction Teams Operations Company. The photographs document these operations from his exclusive, inside perspective as Resident Photographer.

Museum Representative Rebecca Marrazza explains, "The photographs meet all the expectations and the vision of what the photographer set out to capture, revealing images of the troops in Afghanistan, sharing moments of everyday life that the public would not usually see, they are not to be missed".

Corporal Fletcher joined the Army in 1990 as a Royal Engineer and enjoyed thirteen happy years with them before fulfilling a dream to be a photographer in the Royal Logistics Corps. Following a period photographing operations in Northern Ireland, Corporal Fletcher moved to take up the position of Media Operations Photographer based at Head Quarters 16 Air Assault Brigade, Colchester in March 2005 where he has gained wide experience photographing the Army on different operations. In the last eighteen months Cpl Fletcher has deployed all over the UK and further a field to places such as
Gibraltar, Kenya and Afghanistan. This is Corporal Fletcher's first exhibition.

The exhibition will open on 17 January, 2007. -- www.national-army-museum.ac.uk
