The Hunger Site Raises More Than $70,000 For Burma Cyclone Victims

When reports of the devastating Cyclone Nargis first hit the news on May 2, The Hunger Site responded immediately by creating a $25 Gift That Gives More™ for relief work in Burma (Myanmar). Visitors to the popular site could quickly donate $25 or more to help victims of the storm, proving the power of the Internet users to respond rapidly to a crisis.

As is The Hunger Site’s policy, 100% of each Gift donated was funneled by GreaterGood.org (The Hunger Site’s 501c3 partner) to a charity working on the ground in the country: the Foundation for the People of Burma (FPB). As soon as the money came in, The Hunger Site began sending checks to the Foundation. To date, more than $70,000 has gone directly to the Foundation for their work (approximately $49,000 was sent to FPB within two weeks after Cyclone Nargis struck).

FBP’s president Hal Nathan noted that The Hunger Site’s ability to harness the power of the Internet and rapidly raise funds for their work made a life-saving difference in May.

“Our warmest thanks to The Hunger Site and GreaterGood.org for their rapid response and deep concern for the current plight of the people in Burma,” said Nathan. “We are impressed and grateful for their incredible mobilizing efforts which resulted in food, water, shelter, and healthcare for thousands of storm victims during the critical first twelve days after Cyclone Nargis.”

The Foundation for the People of Burma’s network of 345 Burmese staff and volunteers journeyed into the hardest hit areas and has reached more than 130,000 people with medical supplies, food, sanitation, and rebuilding assistance.

“Thanks to contributions from concerned people like the visitors to The Hunger Site, lives have been saved. FPB is in Burma for the long-term and we will work side-by-side with affected communities to open economic opportunities, rebuild housing, and get children back into school,” said Nathan.

The Hunger Site Provides Tons of Food to World’s Hungry

Since 1999, The Hunger Site has pioneered the ability of the Internet to bring people together to make a difference. When people take the simple action of clicking on the yellow button on the site’s home page every day, the result over time is literally thousands of tons of food for the world’s hungry through money provided by sponsoring advertisers. The Click to Give™ program is free for site visitors.

Through two charity partners, Mercy Corps and America’s Second Harvest, The Hunger Site’s Click to Give™ program alone distributed the equivalent of nearly 50 milion cups of food (2,813.3 metric tons) in 2007. The totals of the 2008 Click to Give™ program are posted on The Hunger Site’s results page and are updated daily.

The Hunger Site raises additional funds through the Gifts That Give More™ and contributions paid for by items sold in the The Hunger Site’s online store.

The Hunger Site is part of the GreaterGood Network of websites. To learn more, visit thehungersite.com or greatergood.org.
