Shooting In Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist Church in Knoxville

On Sunday morning, at Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist Church in Knoxville, Tennessee, an unidentified gunman fired a number of shots with a shotgun, killing one person, and wounding at least six others. That person who started the Knoxville church shooting was finally tackled by two parishioners and restrained until the authorities arrived.

The Knoxville church shooting at the Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist Church has left also seven people wounded, who were taken to the University of Tennessee Medical Center. Twelve others received minor wounds and were cared for at the church. Greg McKendry, the one victim who was killed as a result of the shootings reportedly "stood in the front of the gunman and took the blast to protect the rest of us," said Barbara Kemper, a witness to the shooting.

Children from the church's Summer Theater Workshop were performing the musical "Annie" at the time of the shootings reportedly. Authorities believe that all the wounded people are adults, and that no children were injured.

A church member, Steve Drevik, described the gunmen as a "man with long blond hair, who appeared to be in his 40s." The Mayor of Knoxville, Bill Haslam stated that the city had "suffered a tragedy," and that "our thoughts at prayers are with the victims, their families, and the church community."

This report was prepared by the Wikinews, but we also visited the website of Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist Church in Knoxville and saw this short announcement about the shooting in this Knoxville church.

"Our congregation is recovering from the violent incident that occurred during this morning's worship service. Please keep us in your prayers. We will post more information here shortly. Thanks for your continued support."

Knoxville Church Shooting

This is very sad. My heart goes out to the victims of Knoxville church shooting. How these things happen in the church.

I raise a question: how can churches prevent these kind of things?

So sad.

Richardson, anyone can terrorize, its just too easy. So the question is, should we alter our daily lives to try to prevent it?

Consider this, you're at least a million* times more likely to die from a car accident than this kind of terror.

* might be another number, but the point still remains, you are not going to change the fact that people drive a car... unless gas prices rise ;)

Why

How does anyone become so twisted, I always believe the best of people but sometimes you just feel stupid for beeing an optimist.
The reality of it is some do not belong on this earth

The people at this church are kind intellegent human beings.
Rest in peace , hopfully the one that did this will get his.

I am so sorry for the members and family of this church.

This is such a tragic and unwelcome reminder of the pain and brokenness in our sinful world. Our prayers go out to our brothers and sisters in Tennessee as they mourn in this time of loss. I pray that, though difficult, events like this will help unify the church in the hope of the Gospel.

I was thinking about this today and found that Christianity Today is offering a free resource called “Confronting Gun Violence.” I’ll include the link below for any of you who are interested. While we can never predict when an act of violence might occur, this download offers some precautionary measures churches can take to safeguard their people and facilities.

Again, my deepest sympathies go out to our friends in Knoxville and I pray that we can learn to prevent such tragedies in the days to come.
